The Naked Selfie: Empowering or Provocative?

The Naked Selfie is a phenomenon that has been gaining increasing popularity throughout the past few months. Whether it’s Emily Ratajowki or Kim Kardashian, the naked selfie has proved to be a head turning picture that has caused much debate. Some argue that the photo is too revealing and that these women are disrespecting themselves and their bodies. However, others are promoting this behavior and stating that women should not have to be afraid of embracing their sexuality. Personally, I find there to be nothing wrong with the naked selfie because I believe people should be allowed to do what they want to do as long as they are not hurting others. But others disagree with me, for example, Chloe Grace Moretz who publically denounced Kim Kardashian’s behavior on Twitter:

Her argument is the naked selfie is teaching young women that all they have to provide to the world is their bodies. This point of view is interesting since I would’ve believed the people criticizing the naked selfie would be conservative, but Chloe is a liberal feminist. But there are other feminist’s who have an opposite perspective, such as Emily Ratajowski. Her justification for female nudity is that “We [shouldn’t] have to be ashamed of our sexuality.”

Which in theory is true, but where do we draw the line between embracing ourselves and disrespecting ourselves? Well, whatever your opinion is, the phenomenon of the naked selfie otherwise known as the “nelfie” will continue for years to come.

  1. I get that one should love the body that they’re in and that people should not be ashamed of it because everyone is beautiful, I just don’t get why you would want to share it on social media 🙂 if 90% of the people weren’t such a**holes the world would be in peace and everyone would be happy. I also don’t get why one would have something against another human, let them be. I think people have enough problems of their own already, focus in that rather than all these social media hypes 🙂 that’s my opinion 🙂
